When a wound heals, fibrous scar issue is laid down chaotically to repair the injury, and as time passes those fibres become organized and better aligned. Sometimes however they remain weak and chaotic, and can trap nearby nerves and cause layers of connective tissue to stick together. This can result in pain, altered sensation and movement limitation either at the area of the scar or at a seemingly unrelated part of the body. Abdominal scarring can cause digestive dysfunction or back pain for example, and knee surgery can affect the hip or ankle.
